Institutions including MoMA in New York are seizing the opportunity to get gamers through the doors, though some museumgoers are unimpressed

Summer is a tough time to get paying museumgoers through the doors but this year, theres an extra incentive. Art museums like the Whitney and the Museum of Modern Art in New York are jumping on the Pokmon Go bandwagon and helping players of the augmented reality game catch em all.

Just as local businesses have jumped on the bandwagon to get new customers, museums are jumping on board to attract young players and boost ticket sales from Los Angeles to New York, Texas and Boston.

Pokmon Go, the mobile app released earlier this month, boasts 26 million daily active players in the US alone. The game, which has generated over $14m and is available in 25 other countries, allows players to catch cartoon monsters on their smartphones, using the real world as a backdrop for the augmented reality game.

Gamers are out pounding the pavement through a GPS-programmed map, but its not without controversy players have walked off cliffs, found dead bodies and caused a stampede at Central Park.

Pokstops are places where gamers catch characters and gain points. Several of these checkpoints are now at museums.

The MoMA has two Pokstops, including one right at the front gates, showing that some players need not enter the museum to play the game. However, other characters are waiting inside the galleries at the current Tony Oursler and Rachel Harrison exhibitions.

At the Philadelphia Museum of Art, there are eight Pokstops around the building. The museum is devoted to the idea of creative play, according to its associate director of digital marketing, Chessia Kelley, who helped create a Pokmon meet-up during the museums pay what you wish hours.

Apparently, the decision wasnt meant to drive sales rather to attract visitors during an accessible time-period when users are encouraged to casually browse the galleries, said Kelley.

The numbers show an improvement: attendance during the meet-up was up 13% from the previous week, 25% from this time last year and 37% higher than the average during the first quarter of last year .

But its easy to spot the difference between thoughtful museumgoers and hungry gamers hunting for Pokstops who could otherwise be perceived as zombies with smartphones mindlessly trailing through the corridors with screen tunnel vision. In other words, is the art merely a backdrop, seen only through a handheld device?

Many gathered in the galleries where Pokstops were baited and spent several minutes there waiting to see what they could collect before moving to the next stop, said Kelley.

Instead of just planting gamer bait around art, other museums are motivated by different reasons to partake in the craze. The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach, Florida, jumped on the bandwagon because of the cultural connection, as Pokmon was created by the Japanese game designer Satoshi Tajiri in 1995.

We felt we had a direct cultural connection to the Japanese franchise, said Monika Amar, who works in marketing at the museum, which has 15 Pokstops.

Our attendance has spiked in the days since the application was first released, said Amar. Weve found that once people come to play Pokmon Go, they return to experience the museum and gardens and for the opportunity to catch em all in a picturesque landscape.

But it isnt all so Zen. On the Morikami fanpage, people posted photos of their vandalized garden. Some Pokmon Go users carved their team names into trees one reading Team Instinct Rocks and were caught climbing trees.

That angered one museumgoer with an annual membership to the Morikami gardens, Kandi Kalistar.

Im so appalled my serene quiet place is marked up by idiots chasing Pokmon, said Kalistar in one of her YouTube videos. Im disgusted by the lack of courtesy of these kids, but its not only kids. Have respect for the environment around you.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington also asked the game developers Niantic Labs to remove the Pokstops from the museum when staff realised that some users would be tempted to play the game there.

Playing Pokmon Go in a memorial dedicated to the victims of Nazism is extremely inappropriate, said Andrew Hollinger, the museums communications director. The museum encourages visitors to use their phones to share and engage with museum content while here. Technology can be an important learning tool, but this game falls far outside of our educational and memorial mission.

For the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas, the game is a better fit. Were hopeful that Pokmon Go will attract these young visitors, while helping promote free admission for 19 and under, said Julie Ledet, the museums communications officer.

We are definitely considering the possibilities of what kind of engagement this could create with new visitors and definitely a younger generation of museumgoers.

Some characters are hidden in the museums courtyard, while others are situated by famous artworks by Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet. Pokstops are historical and cultural markers, Ledet said. They give players an extra incentive to visit these spaces.

However, Pokstops are now the most popular visiting spots in the museum, meaning that other artworks may lose out. Kiki Smiths Woman and Sheep marks one of the eight Pokstops on museum grounds. We have a fun joke running on the museums Snapchat that the Auguste Rodin sculpture Head of Pierre de Wissant is bummed that he wasnt selected as a Pokstop, too, she said.

Paul Feigs all-female reboot of Ghostbusters has failed to top the US box office with a lukewarm $46m opening weekend.

The comedy horror, starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, will need to impress international audiences to warrant its $144m budget. Analysts suggest that it will need to make around $300m globally to break even. After almost two years of online anger from fans over the choice to cast four women in the lead roles, the audience was 57% female a high number for a blockbuster.

Its also envisioned as the start of a new franchise with Sony promising more films to come.

Were ecstatic with this opening. We have successfully restarted an important brand, said Josh Greenstein, Sonys worldwide marketing and distribution president. We have lots of room to run in the coming weeks as the big comedy in the marketplace.

But it wasnt enough to unseat The Secret Life of Pets which made $50.6m in its second weekend. The Universal animation has already passed the $200m mark. Its a strong summer for cartoons at the box office with Finding Dory becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time, beating previous record-holder Shrek 2.

Elsewhere, Bryan Cranston drama The Infiltrator opened with a decent $6.7m from just 1,601 screens while Woody Allens period comedy Caf Society scored the strongest screen average of the year, making $361,000 from just five locations.

Michelle Van Etten, billed as small business owner on official schedule, is multi-level marketer of nutritional products who says she doesnt have employees

A Donald Trump supporter with a primetime speaking slot at the Republican national convention, who is billed as a small business owner employing more than 100,000 people, is actually a multi-level marketer who does not employ anyone.

Michelle Van Etten was personally invited by the Trump campaign to address the Republican party gathering in Cleveland, Ohio, during a pro-business session on Wednesday evening titled Make America First Again.

The official schedule for the convention states: Michelle employs over 100,000 people and is a strong supporter of Donald Trump, knowing his policies will support businesses all across America.

In an interview on Monday, however, Van Etten said the billing was incorrect. I dont employ, she said, adding that she did not know who wrote the text.

Van Etten, 42, works on her own as an independent retailer of products supplied by Youngevity, a multi-level marketing corporation based in California. Youngevity says that it sells hundreds of products such as nutritional supplements, jewelry and coffee.

The Daily Beast first reported Van Ettens link to Youngevity on Monday, noting that some of the firms nutritional products are sold by the conspiracy theorist and radio presenter Alex Jones via the InfoWars website.

Through her own limited liability company (LLC) incorporated in Florida, Van Etten currently focuses on selling on Youngevitys womenswear range designed by Marisa Kenson. Van Etten declined to disclose how much profit she made but said that it was less than $1m a year.

She said on Monday that she was in fact part of a network of 100,000 sellers in the US, Canada, Mexico and other countries, in which distributors work to recruit other distributors. Nobody works for me, because we are all individual contractors, and we all have our own individual businesses, she said.

Van Etten said that she collected between 3% and 5% of profits made from sales by other members below her in the Youngevity network, which she likened to franchise arrangements used by several major fast-food corporations.

She said her retail venture had funded several vacations and had enabled her husband to retire from the US navy and home-school their children in order to avoid the Common Core curriculum opposed by many conservatives. We are living the American dream, she said.

Van Etten said after meeting Trump at a campaign event in California, she was asked to speak at the convention in a phone call from Jo Ann Poly Calvo, a New York-based events executive currently working for the Trump campaign. I jumped at the chance, she said.

It was Trumps corporate prowess that most attracted Van Ettens support, she said. He resonates with me because hes a businessman, she said. We need someone whos not a bureaucrat.

A spokesman for Youngevity said on Monday that he was traveling and could not immediately comment. This article will be updated with any response from the company.
